St Nicholas Church – Prague, Czech Republic – Daily Photo

We normally think of St Nick as jolly but this statue from St Nicholas Church in Prague has more of a coal in the stocking feel because clearly this churchman (Pope Alexander VII) thinks someone has been bad. Who is under the pope’s heel? Is it the devil? In this counter-reformation church it is most likely a protestant. Remember that this is the spot where the 30 years war broke out and Alexander was pope at the end of that conflict so there might still be a few bitter feelings.
