Road Trip Through Luther Land and the Heart of Germany - Amateur Traveler Episode 519

transcript

In preparation for the 2017 500th anniversary of the Reformation, Chris (the Amateur Traveler) took a road trip through “Luther Land” and the heart of Germany.

It started as a trip to see many of the significant sites associated with Luther like Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Erfurt, Eisenach and Wartburg Castle but then expanded to include other historical sites in the area and a visit to a collection of UNESCO sites including: Bauhaus and its sites in Weimar and Dessau, Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, Classical Weimar, Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz, Luther Memorials in Eisleben and Wittenberg, Museum Island in Berlin, the Ancient Beech Forests of Germany, and Wartburg Castle as well as the Elbe Riverside UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Most of the road trip centered on the states of Saxony-Anhalt (Sachsen-Anhalt) and Thuringia (Thüringen) which were part of the old GDR (East Germany). Many cities in these areas lost a third of their population after the wall came down, but most of the cities boast beautiful medieval centers and are rich with history. Chris explores ancient market squares, monasteries and churches, canopy walks, castles and palaces, museums and festivals.

Hear about the children’s parade from the Luther Wedding festival, where in Germany you can find the gates of ancient Babylon, and which palace has manmade waterfalls.

Whether you are on a protestant pilgrimage, a fan of German musicians or poets, or connoisseur of beautiful gardens, the heart of Germany will not disappoint. Of course if you like a good bratwurst, then all the better.
