Puerta del Sol or “Gate of the Sun” is in the center of Madrid. It contains the 0 mile marker from which all distances from Madrid are mentioned. It is also the Spanish equivalent of Times Square on New Year’s Eve where traditionally the Spanish gather and try and eat the twelve “grapes of luck” while the clock chimes 12 times. The Tío Pepe sign advertises a brand of Sherry.

If you go to the New Years celebration (I recommend it), try to stay at the Hotel Europa on the Calle del Carmen, which radiates out deom the Puerta del Sol. Get a room with a balcony that overlooks the Puerta del Sol. It avoids the enormous crowds but you are still in the middle of the party.
