Europe is at the top of the list for travel destinations for many Americans and other English speakers once they get up the courage to travel over seas. But the novice traveler to Europe many have many questions.
- How can I lay out a route?
- How much will it cost?
- Do I need a visa or visas?
- Can I get a job in Europe (like teaching English)?
- Should I stay in a hostel? hotel? apartment? couchsurf?
- Should I rent a car, take the train or fly?
- Is a Eurail pass worth the money?
- Are budget airlines reliable and safe?
- Do I need to learn a foreign language?
- Is it safe to drink the water?
- Should I just take a Guided European Tour?
Friends of the Amateur Traveler Craig and Linda Martin of the Indie Travel Podcast have taken their experience of instructing people how to travel independently and created an eBook (or audio book) that will help you tackle Europe, even if you have not been out of your home country. They make a strong case for independent travel and cover these questions with special sections for family travel, solo travel and traveling as a woman.
Besides being two of my favorite people, I have always found their take on travel to be informative (even if they spell traveling the British way).
The also have a book on solo travel called The Art of Solo Travel
